On a recent broadcast of Today in Yuma with Jennifer Blackwell and Teresa Stob, listeners heard from Steven Dennis, a local athlete preparing for a national strongman competition in Denver this June. Dennis, who began training only a few years ago, has already earned first-place titles in both powerlifting and strongman events. He is currently raising funds to cover travel expenses.

The program also featured Josh Stein, VP of External Affairs and Business Partnerships for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, and Rowena, Branch Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Yuma. They highlighted the club’s rapid growth, expanding from 37 members in 2022 to more than 150 today.

Youth at the Yuma branch take part in a range of activities, including gardening, clay, LEGO, sports, and dance. Members also create their own team names and jerseys, and older teens mentor younger participants. Staff provide meals, homework help, and mentorship, while partnerships with groups such as the Rotary Club of Yuma, schools, and local businesses continue to support the program.
